Mesos, NX and Leaf Points in Classic World, Explained

Classic World runs on three currencies. What mesos, NX and Leaf Points each buy, which carry over from MapleStory, and which ones players can trade between them.

4 min readeconomyguide

MapleStory Classic World has three currencies, and only one of them moves between players. Mesos are the in-game money you earn from monsters and trade in the Free Market. NX is Nexon's cash currency, shared with the main MapleStory game. Leaf Points are Classic's own cash currency, handed out through events. If you came back to Maple after fifteen years, that is the part that changed: there used to be mesos and NX, and that was it.

Facts below come from Nexon's Classic World FAQ and the founders access release notes, as of 8 October.

Mesos, the money everyone trades

Mesos are what monsters drop and what NPC shops take. Potions, arrows, throwing stars, cab fares, storage fees, scrolls in the Free Market, the second job weapon you want at 30. If a player sells it to another player, it is priced in mesos.

They are also the only currency in Classic that you can hand to another character through the trade window. That is why every economy question in this game, from scroll prices to meso shops, comes back to them. Classic's economy is young, so amounts are small and people talk in K, thousands of mesos, rather than the millions you might remember from later GMS. Our primer on how mesos worked in old Maple explains why the numbers grow the way they do.

NX, shared with main MapleStory

NX is bought with real money on Nexon's site and spent in the Cash Shop. Nexon's FAQ is clear that NX is the one balance shared between MapleStory and Classic World. Nothing else crosses over: Maple Points from the main game stay there, and MVP status does not exist in Classic.

You can use NX to gift Cash Shop items to friends in Classic, which the FAQ confirms. You cannot use it to buy a Founder's Package, which is sold separately on the Nexon site and on Steam.

Leaf Points, Classic's own cash currency

Leaf Points are new. The FAQ describes them as an alternative source of Cash currency in Classic World, and so far the main way to get them is events.

The clearest example is Founder's First Step, which runs until 20 October for characters level 10 and above. Check in with Maple Administrator and the first day gives 5,000 Leaf Points, then 1,000 a day for days two to seven, each in an exchange coupon that is untradable and lasts seven days. During the spring test, Social utility items in the Cash Shop were priced at 100 Leaf Points, though Nexon said test prices were not final.

What each currency buys

Currency Where it comes from What it buys Tradable between players
Mesos Monsters, quests, selling NPC shops, player trades, services Yes, by trade
NX Bought with real money Cash Shop items, gifts No
Leaf Points Events such as check-ins Cash Shop items No

Cash Shop items themselves follow their own rules. The FAQ says outfit boxes can be moved between characters on the same account and in the same world through the Cash Inventory, while hair and face styles from coupons are untradable. Founder's Package outfit sets come in a box that is tradable within your account for 30 days, and the outfit inside becomes permanent and untradable once opened.

Can you turn one into another

Not directly. There is no exchange in Classic that converts NX or Leaf Points into mesos, and no way to send either one to another player.

The indirect route, in old GMS, was buying a tradable cash item with NX and selling it to another player for mesos. Whether any Classic Cash Shop items can be traded that way is something Nexon has not covered in the FAQ or release notes as of 8 October.

When it did work back in the day, one of us paid for most of a level 50 Hunter's gear by selling a single cash shop cape to someone who wanted to match their guild colours. It felt like cheating. It was just the market.

What this means in practice

For playing, you only need to think about mesos. Everything that affects your character's strength is bought with them, and Nexon's stated policy for the Classic Cash Shop is cosmetics and convenience. Our older post on what NX bought in old Maple covers that policy and what it rules out.

For spending real money, the official route now is NX for the Cash Shop. Founder's Packages went off sale on 14 October; the founders access guide covers what they included. Buying mesos from a third party is not an official route and breaks Nexon's terms.

Our one tip: claim the Founder's First Step Leaf Points every day before the coupons expire. It is the easiest free cash currency you will ever get in this game, and seven days goes faster than you think.
