Where to Train From Level 30 to 70 in Classic Maple

The training maps that actually worked before Big Bang, from Wild Boars and Zombie Lupins to Coolie Zombies and Himes, with a bracket-by-bracket table.

5 min readguide

Level 30 to 70 was the long middle of pre-Big Bang Maple, and it is where most people either found their footing or quit. The maps below are the ones we actually used, in the order we used them, back when a level 50 was something people stopped to look at. If MapleStory Classic keeps the old spawn rates and exp curve, this list should hold up. If Nexon has quietly changed things, some of it will need adjusting.

We are writing this for a normal solo player, mostly melee or ranged. Mages have their own arithmetic, which we cover in the mage leeching post.

The early thirties: Boars and Lupins

At 30 you have just got your second job and you feel strong for about two levels. Land of Wild Boar in the Perion area was the classic answer. Wild Boars hit fairly hard but they are everywhere, the map is flat, and they drop enough to keep your potion costs sane. Warriors in particular loved it.

Zombie Lupins, on the Sleepywood side of the island, are the other option in the low thirties. They are a step up in HP and they drop the bananas that half the server collected for no clear reason. The maps are a bit more vertical, which suits a Hunter or an Assassin who can pick things off from a platform. We split our time between the two until around 35, then went straight to Ludibrium PQ, if Ludibrium is in at launch, which our LPQ guide covers in detail.

Ludibrium in the forties

Ludibrium is the heart of this bracket, partly for LPQ and partly because the Toy Factory maps are so dense. Truckers are the big one. Around level 40 they are worth good exp per kill, they come in numbers, and the factory layout lets you pin them on a few platforms. Everyone has a memory of a Trucker map on a good channel with nobody else in it. Ours involved a Bandit, a Cleric friend, and roughly four hours we should have spent on homework.

Platoon Chronos and the other Chronos variants live nearby and are a fine alternative when the Trucker maps are crowded, which at launch they will be. The Toy area more generally, Block Golems, Robos and the rest, will carry a normal character from about 38 to 48 with breaks for LPQ. Mages do especially well here because the mobs cluster.

Drakes and the Sleepywood dungeon

Once LPQ starts feeling thin, around 48 to 50, a lot of people went back to Victoria Island for the Drake maps in the Sleepywood dungeon. Drakes and their cousins have chunky HP and give exp to match. The maps are long and the spawn is generous. The downside is that they hit hard and a warrior without decent gear burns potions fast.

This is also where a lot of players started thinking seriously about gear, because the difference between a clean weapon and a scrolled one becomes obvious. We wrote about that in the scrolling post.

Coolie Zombies and the mid fifties

Coolie Zombies in the Dead Mine under El Nath were the standard from roughly 50 to 60. Big, slow, lots of HP, weak to holy, and packed into a handful of maps. Clerics could almost fall asleep there. Everyone else found them a good honest grind with drops that paid for themselves.

The competition for those maps at launch will be fierce. Expect to channel hop, and expect to be asked to leave a map by someone who got there first. That was the etiquette then and we expect it to hold.

Wolf Spiders, with a warning

Wolf Spiders are on every old training list and for good reason. The exp was excellent and they dropped things people wanted. The warning is about level, and about where they are: the Warped Path of Time on the Ludibrium side, not the Dead Mine, whatever your memory says. They were higher level than their reputation suggested, and a lot of level 55s wandered in expecting Coolie Zombies with legs and got flattened. Treat them as a mid-to-high sixties map unless you are a well-geared ranged class or have a Cleric with you. When you are ready, they are some of the best exp before 70.

Himes and Bains for the top of the bracket

The last stretch, roughly 65 to 70 and well beyond, was Zipangu. Himes at Encounter with the Buddha and the Bains in the Showa maps were where the serious players lived. Himes were the mage and Hermit map of choice. Bains were tougher and better for warriors who could take a hit. Both were crowded on every channel at any hour, and both were where a lot of guilds trained together, which made them social maps as much as exp maps.

The short version

Levels Map Why
30 to 35 Land of Wild Boar, Zombie Lupins Flat, dense, cheap on potions
35 to 48 Ludibrium Toy Factory (Truckers, Chronos, Golems) Best exp per hour, plus LPQ next door
48 to 52 Sleepywood dungeon Drakes Big HP, big exp, tests your gear
50 to 60 Coolie Zombies, Dead Mine Reliable, holy-weak, everyone's default
62 to 70 Wolf Spiders Excellent exp once you can survive them
65 to 70 and up Himes, Bains in Zipangu Where the high levels actually trained

One tip we would give any new player at launch. Do not chase the "best" map. Chase the map with an open channel. A half-empty Trucker map beats a Wolf Spider map with three other parties in it every single time, and the good spots will be full for the first two months regardless of what any guide says.
