MapleStory Classic Beginner Guide for Your First Weekend
A MapleStory Classic beginner guide for launch day: the first ten levels, picking a job, potions, Kerning PQ, and the mistakes every new player makes.
MapleStory Classic opens to everyone today, 21 October 2026, and if this is your first time in a 2D side-scrolling MMO from the era when games assumed you had time, welcome. This is the beginner guide we would hand a friend who has never played: what the game is, what to do in the first ten hours, and the handful of mistakes that make new players quit before the good part. The founders crowd has had two weeks, so the towns are already busy. That is a good thing. It means parties.
What you are playing
Classic World is Nexon's official return to MapleStory as it was in 2005, with some modern polish: widescreen, macOS, controller support, and a few combat tweaks, all listed in our changes post. The launch build is Maple Island and Victoria Island with four classes, and more regions come later. The game is free from today, on the Nexon Launcher or Steam, and the download post covers the install.
The thing to understand before anything else is pace. Levels are slow, on purpose. Level 30 is a weekend. Level 70 is months. Every level costs something, which is why every level means something, and the game's social life comes from that. If you want a fast game, this is not it. If you want a game where a stranger handing you a potion is a real event, keep reading.
Hours one to two: Maple Island
You start on Maple Island as a Beginner. Kill Snails, do the short quests the NPCs offer, learn the controls: arrow keys to move, alt to jump by default, ctrl to attack, and the keys you set for potions. Put your ability points into the stat for the job you want, and decide that job now: STR for Warriors, INT for Magicians, DEX for Bowmen and Thieves. Our stat build post explains why.
Leave at level 8. Not 10, not "one more quest". Take the ship from Southperry with Shanks, land at Lith Harbor, and walk to the town of your job. It is a one-way trip and nothing on the island matters after you leave.
Hours two to four: the first job
At level 10 (8 for Magicians) you talk to an instructor and pick a job. Warriors in Perion, Magicians in Ellinia, Bowmen in Henesys, Thieves in Kerning City. The job advancement post has the table and the stat each one checks. If you are torn, our class guide makes the case for a Cleric as the cheapest, most-wanted first character, and a Spearman as the sturdiest.
Then buy potions. A slot of Red Potions from the town general store, later Oranges. A Magician buys Blue Potions instead. The potions post has the list, and the rule for beginners is simple: never leave town without a full slot of the right potion and a return scroll.
Hours four to ten: Henesys, Pigs, and level 21
Follow the fastest route to 30. Henesys Hunting Ground to 15, Pig Beach to 20, then Kerning City for the party quest at 21. Along the way, pick up everything that drops and sell it to an NPC when your inventory is full. That is where early money comes from, and the level 1 to 30 farming guide is the long version. Do not buy gear before 30. The shop weapons are fine.
The maps will be crowded today. Take the less popular one two maps over rather than waiting for spawns in the famous one.
Kerning PQ, where the game starts
At level 21, go to the Kerning City subway, find the NPC Lakelis, and join a party for the Kerning Party Quest. Four players, four stages, a boss called King Slime, about ten minutes a run, and the best exp in the game until 30. More importantly, it is where you meet people. Type your level and class in the map, wait for an invite, and say hello. The KPQ guide explains the stages and the queue etiquette, and the etiquette matters, because the people in that subway are the ones who will be in your guild by November.
The mistakes we watched people make
Putting AP in the wrong stat. It is permanent. Decide the job first.
Buying a weapon at level 15. It will be replaced at 20. Spend on potions.
Grinding alone from 21 to 30 because joining a party felt awkward. Everyone in KPQ was a stranger to everyone else last week.
Trusting the first person who offers a "free" item, a "double your mesos" trick, or a client download. The scam post is the ten minutes that saves your account.
Playing until 4 a.m. on the first night. Level 33 and grumpy is not ahead of level 28 and rested.
One of us, in 2005, stayed on Maple Island until level 14 because the Snails felt safe. It took a stranger in Amherst typing "why are you still here" to fix it. Consider this post that stranger.
After the weekend
By Monday you should be level 25 to 30, in a KPQ party or two, with a few thousand mesos and a name on the friends list. Then the game opens up: second job at 30, the Sleepywood side of the island, and the slow, sociable middle of old Maple that our leveling spots guide covers. Find a guild early, because the guild post is right that the guild is the game.
Welcome to Victoria Island. Leave the island at 8, buy the potions, join the party, and go to bed.
