Fastest Route From Level 1 to 30 in Classic on 1x Rates

A MapleStory Classic leveling guide for levels 1 to 30 on 1x rates: Maple Island, Henesys Hunting Ground, Pigs, Green Mushrooms, the Kerning subway and KPQ.

5 min readguideleveling

The fastest realistic route to 30 in MapleStory Classic, assuming 1x rates, is this: Maple Island to 8, Henesys Hunting Ground to 15, Pigs to 20, Green Mushrooms or the Kerning subway to 21, then Kerning Party Quest to 30. Done efficiently that is somewhere between ten and fifteen hours of play for most classes, a bit less for a Cleric or a Hunter with a good bow, a bit more for a warrior who cannot hit anything yet.

That is the whole guide in one paragraph. The rest of this post is why, plus the places where we and everyone we knew wasted hours in 2006.

The route, level by level

Levels Where What to kill Notes
1 to 8 Maple Island Snails, Blue Snails, Red Snails Leave at 8, mages go to Ellinia
8 to 10 Henesys area Snails, Slimes Take the job at 10
10 to 15 Henesys Hunting Ground Slimes, Orange Mushrooms, Stumps Crowded, use side maps
15 to 20 Pig Beach Pigs, Ribbon Pigs Best exp per hour under 20
20 to 21 Green Mushrooms or subway Green Mushrooms, Stirges Just get to 21
21 to 30 Kerning City KPQ Stay until 30

Warriors and thieves can swap Pigs for Wild Boars near Perion around 18 if you can take the hits. Archers should not.

Maple Island, and when to leave

The mistake almost everyone made on their first character was staying on Maple Island too long. The island is safe and pleasant and the exp past level 7 or 8 is dreadful. Red Snails are fine at 6. At 9 they are a waste of your life.

Leave at 8 if you are anything but a Magician. Magicians should leave at 8 too, because that is when you job advance in Ellinia and Magic Claw turns you into a real character. Do the little weapon quests before you go, take the free potions, and get on the ship.

Henesys Hunting Ground, 10 to 15

Once you have your first job, go to Henesys Hunting Ground. Slimes and Orange Mushrooms are the point, Stumps are a bonus if you can hit them. Warriors with Power Strike and a decent axe or sword will feel fine here. Bowmen will run out of arrows, buy more than you think.

The problem with this map is that it will be the single most crowded place in the game on launch week. Every channel, every platform. If you spend more time waiting for spawns than killing, walk two maps over. The forest maps between Henesys and Ellinia have the same monsters at lower density and nobody there.

Our tip from years of leveling alts: go up, not sideways. The upper platforms of HHG clear slower than the ground and people skip them.

Pigs, 15 to 20

Pig Beach is the best exp you will see before 30 outside of a PQ. Pigs and Ribbon Pigs spawn fast, hit for almost nothing, and the map is a flat line so you never stop attacking. Ribbon Pigs also drop a few useful scrolls now and then, and a 10% Scroll for Overall Armor for DEF is a nice little sale on day two.

If Pig Beach is full, the pig maps near Nautilus (if Classic includes it) or the Perion Wild Boars for tougher classes are the fallbacks.

The awkward gap, 20 to 21

Level 20 to 21 is one level and it feels like three. KPQ needs 21, so you have to fill it somewhere. Green Mushrooms are the standard answer for anyone who leveled here in 2006, and they still are. They drop Green Mushroom Caps, which nobody wants, and occasionally scrolls.

The Kerning City subway is the other option. Stirges in the first section give solid exp for the level, and you are already standing in the town you need to be in. Warriors can also do Ligators in the swamp to the left of Kerning, and thieves with Double Stab do well there too.

KPQ, 21 to 30

Kerning Party Quest is the reason this route ends where it does. At 1x rates, a good party doing KPQ back to back from 21 to 30 will get there faster than any grinding map, and it is also the first time old Maple stops being a solo game. You will meet your first friends here, or your first scammer.

The run is four stages with a party of four (Ligators and coupons, ropes, platforms, King Slime), and our KPQ guide walks through each one.

We have a fond memory of a party at about 3 a.m. Swedish time in 2006 that failed the platform stage eleven times because one member kept moving. He turned out to be a good guy. He was just tired.

Stay at KPQ until 30 unless the tracks are dead or you cannot find a party. If the PQ is dead on your channel, hop. If it is dead everywhere, the subway Jr. Wraiths from about 25 are a fine substitute and drop decent scrolls.

Where people wasted time

The big three, in order of how much time they cost:

  • Staying on Maple Island or at Slimes past their useful level because the map felt safe.
  • Grinding 21 to 30 at Green Mushrooms alone because getting into a KPQ party seemed like effort.
  • Doing every quest in every town on the way. Most first-job quests in old Maple gave less exp than the monsters you killed to complete them.

Questing does have a place, and our grinding vs questing post is honest about when it wins. Before 30 it mostly does not.

Get to 30, take your second job, and go read the 30 to 70 leveling spots. That is where the game actually starts.
