Cheap MapleStory Classic Mesos, and Why Prices Vary 40x

Why one site lists 10K MapleStory Classic mesos for 33 cents and another for 14 dollars, which cheap offers hold up, and how to compare quotes per 100K.

4 min readeconomy

Cheap MapleStory Classic mesos are easy to find. On 8 October we looked at the sites that come up first when you search for them, and the price of 10K ranged from about 33 cents to almost 14 dollars. That is a forty-fold spread for the same game. Some of that gap is honest, some of it is a different product wearing the same name, and a little of it is the kind of cheap that costs you more later. Here is how to tell which is which.

A one-line reminder before the numbers, because it matters more for cheap stock than for any other kind: buying mesos breaks Nexon's terms, and our honest take covers what that risk looks like.

First, make the units match

Meso prices get quoted in at least four different units, and half the confusion comes from comparing them directly.

Marketplaces often show a price "per 1K" with four decimal places. Some shops sell bundles of 10K. Others, us included, quote per 100K. And older guides still talk about 100M, which describes the old GMS economy years after launch, not a Classic world in its first month.

Convert everything to one unit before you compare anything. We use per 100K because that is roughly what a mid-sized purchase looks like right now. A quote of 0.0040 dollars per 1K is 40 cents per 100K. A bundle of 10K for 90 cents is 9 dollars per 100K. Those two numbers look similar on a busy page and are more than twenty times apart.

Second, check the region

This is the biggest single cause of "how is it so cheap".

Global MapleStory Classic World is not the only classic version. Taiwan runs one and China runs one, each with its own worlds and its own economy. Many listing pages put all three under the same heading with a small region selector, and the lowest "from" price on the page is often for a region you cannot log into. Mesos never move between regions. A bargain on the wrong one is worth exactly nothing.

The same goes for the main MapleStory game. Mesos there are a different currency in a different economy, priced in a completely different range.

Third, read "from" prices for what they are

On a marketplace with many sellers, the headline price is the cheapest listing that exists, not the price you will pay. That listing might have a large minimum order, a slow seller with no rating, or stock that ran out yesterday and was never taken down.

Click through to the actual offer for your region and world, at the amount you want, and compare that number. It is usually a lot closer to everyone else's.

Where truly cheap stock comes from

Once units and regions match, most honest prices for Global Classic land in a fairly narrow band, which moves week by week with the Free Market. Anything far below that band came from somewhere, and in old Maple there were three usual sources.

  • Bots farming around the clock. Cheap to produce, and the first thing a ban wave targets.
  • Hacked accounts, emptied and sold on. Mesos taken from a real player can be traced and taken back.
  • Purchases made with stolen cards. When the chargeback lands, the seller's characters get investigated, and so do the people they traded with.

When a ban wave hits a bot network, the customers who traded with it are part of the trail. Nexon's Classic World FAQ also makes clear that a sanction applies to the whole account, main MapleStory characters included. Saving two dollars on mesos is not worth a twelve-year-old Bishop.

One of us bought from the cheapest seller we could find in 2007, got the mesos, and watched the seller's characters vanish a week later. Nothing happened to our account. We still think about how close that was.

What a fair price looks like this month

There is no fixed fair price, because the right number depends on how old the world is. Classic opened on 6 October, founders access is a small crowd, and almost nobody has spare mesos yet. That makes this the most expensive stretch the economy will ever have, and prices will fall for months as more players reach the maps that pay well. Our meso price post has the shape of that curve from the old servers.

A useful sanity check is what 100K buys in the Henesys market this week. If a shop's price means 100K costs more than you would spend on a full evening out, wait. If it costs less than a can of soda, ask yourself where the mesos came from.

How to compare two quotes properly

Put them side by side with the same columns and the answer usually jumps out.

What to check Why it matters
Price per 100K The only fair way to compare
Region and world Taiwan or China stock is useless on Global
Minimum order Changes the real per-100K rate
Delivery method A trade in game, described in plain words
Who you trade with A shop's own characters, or an unknown reseller
Refund terms in writing What happens if it never arrives

Ours follows the going market rate for each server, checked every hour, and the shop page shows the live rate with a chart of how it has moved. The best tip we have on price is boring: whichever seller you pick, buy a small amount first. A seller who delivers 50K properly will deliver 500K properly, and one who does not has cost you very little to find out. Our guide to meso trade scams covers the rest.
